A 4-year PhD Position in physical oceanography is available with the Geophysical Institute of the University of Bergen, Norway in association with the Centre for Climate Dynamics at the Bjerknes Centre.

The research will constitute a PhD study with the overall objective to understand and quantify the role of the floating Antarctic ice shelves in the ocean climate system and the sea level change. This will be achieved through process studies including deep water formation, ice-shelf cavity circulation, basin-shelf exchanges, dynamics and mixing of dense overflow, and their link to the large scale thermohaline circulation. The project will include considerable field work and utilize state-of-the-art instruments for process studies from ship as well as long time series from moorings.

About Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen, Norway

The Geophysical Institute carries out research and provides education in meteorology, climate, physical and dynamical oceanography and chemical oceanography. The department currently has 17 permanent scientific positions and 13 technical/administrative positions. In addition, there are 11 adjunct professors and around 50 PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and full-time researchers.

Application requirements for PhD in Geophysics

Applicants must have achieved a master’s degree in oceanography, meteorology, physics, applied mathematics or related fields, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is prerequisite, however, that the formal admission requirements for the PhD programme are met before appointment can be made.

Good knowledge of physical processes in the ocean, experience in field work, and good skills in mathematics and programming are required. Experience with numerical modelling is an advantage.
