A PhD student position in Environmental Sciences is open within the University Centre for Environment (HENVI) jointly with The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) for a fixed term from 1 January 2012 to 31 December 2014.

The researcher will have an employment contract with Helsinki University Center for Environment, HENVI, however, the main work location is the Finnish Meteorological Institute in Helsinki. The position is funded by the Helsinki University Centre for Environment HENVI and Finnish Meteorological Institute.

PhD Description

The PhD student position is connected with the HENVI research program “Optimizing forest management and conservation to account for multiple interactions with the climate”. The position’s research theme concerns regional climate modeling of the effects of past and future land use change in Finland, especially the effects of wetland forestation on climate and greenhouse gas fluxes.

Candidate Requirements

Candidates should have a MSc or equivalent in natural or computational sciences, ideally in the area of atmospheric, ocean or climate sciences, physics, chemistry or engineering. In addition, strong numerical modelling skills and fluency in English are essential for this project. Willingness and skills to operate in a multi-disciplinary and extensively networked project are important. The work in this project is expected to result in a dissertation.

PhD Salary

The salary will be based on levels 1–4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
