The PhD (ESR) scholarship in Material Science is offered by the BioTiNet Initial Training Network focused on innovative biocompatible Titanium-based structures for orthopaedics.

Description
The goal of this project is in-situ formation of thin (≤ 1 μm) nanostructured bioactive coatings on massive and porous Ti-materials to provide an improved bone ingrowth and to prevent diffusion of potentially allergenic and neurotoxic elements from the alloy into the body. That will allow Improved understanding of the surface morphology of the coating as a function of processing parameters and understanding of its effect on physical properties and biocompatibility of the coating.

Tasks: a) creation of nanostructured bioactive coatings by one-step hydrothermal treatment of
Ti-alloys (by aid of inorganic additives and surface active agents);
b) Characterisation of the coatings: adhesion strength, wetting angles, bioactivity tests, morphology;
c) Characterisation of: shear strength, adhesion strength, scratch, morphology (SEM, TEM, XPS), phase composition (XRD); d) micro- and nanostructural characterisation of the substrate-coating interphase (FEG SEM, TEM, HRTEM, EDX).

Benefits
This program offers a 3-year full-time position at Jožef Stefan Institute as researcher with a salary according to EU regulations (Marie Curie ITN fellow). The ESR will be enrolled in a PhD programme which offers excellent networking opportunities with the rest of the project partners .

Profile
The candidate must be fluent in spoken and written English.
The candidate should hold a Masters degree in a natural science (Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry) and should have experience with experimental research.
The applicant must not have spent more than 12 months in the country (Slovenia) of the host/recruiting institution in the 3 years prior to selection.

How to apply:
Applications (in English) including a CV, certificates of the grades of examination, a motivation letter describing their research career goals, skills and experience, as well as two letters of recommendation should be sent by e-mail to the following addresses, quoting the project name "BioTiNet-IFW-ESR12":
