The ATLAS Data Processing Group (ADP) of the CERN unit in Switzerland has a Job opening in Computing Engineer Database Expert. The Research Engineer vacancy is for a database expert who has to work closely with both the CERN-IT Oracle database support group, and the ATLAS software developers and physicists.

The ATLAS experiment (Atlas Experiment) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider produces several petabytes of event data per year, which are analysed by the collaboration world-wide using a Grid-based computing infrastructure. The event data are accompanied by terabytes of data in relational databases, relating both to the detector performance and calibration, and the many stages of processing undergone before they are analysed by the physicists. These databases are a crucial part of the ATLAS computing system. They must meet criteria of high performance, scalability and robustness and be replicated across the many participating computing centres.

Functions of the Computing Engineer, CERN

As an active member of the ATLAS Data Processing Group, you will:
  • Develop and operate the ATLAS distributed database system, including online operations at the ATLAS experiment, CERN processing and replication to regional centres over the world-wide Grid;
  • Develop and operate monitoring tools, problem resolution and recovery procedures;
  • Provide specialist expertise and help to ATLAS database developers, particularly in the areas of optimisation and performance tuning;
  • Participe in WLCG (the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid) and related efforts developing the Grid-based distributed database system;
  • Provide a bridge between ATLAS developers/users, CERN-IT database support and regional Grid services.
Qualification required for the Database Engineer Job, Swiss
  • University degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent.
  • Oracle DBA certification.
Experience and competencies
  • Several years of significant working experience in information technology, with an emphasis on database applications in a distributed environment.
  • Good knowledge of database-application development with Oracle database technologies and related tools.
  • Familiarity with the database replication technologies, particularly Oracle Streams.
  • Experience with Oracle database optimisation and tuning tools.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary distributed team.
  • Practice attentive listening and actively promote mutual understanding.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English; basic knowledge of French or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.
