A Job opening for the position of an Technician (Computing Systems Administrator) in the Information Technology Department (IT), Computing Facilities Group (CF) of the CERN unit in Switzerland.

It’s a busy environment, and we need a new recruit to our team of nine, keeping all the hardware running. And it’s big numbers. 14PB on-line disk storage, 35PB tape storage for starters. It’s probably not the most glamorous job at CERN, but it’s a great team environment and would be a fantastic start or early role for a career in systems administration, and we’re ready to train you.

Functions of the Computing Systems Administrator, CERN

To work as a member of the team responsible for the day-to-day operation of:
  • CERN’s large Grid computing fabric (several thousand processors running the Linux operating system, over 14PB on-line disk storage and 35PB tape storage);
  • Windows services (roughly 300 servers offering file and application services as well as terminal service consoles), Web services (40 servers), and Mail services (50 servers).
The successful candidate will be part of a team of 9 who:
  • Test new servers and diagnose problems with them;
  • Install the Operating System and deploy various software packages on new servers;
  • Respond to alarms on production systems, most of them running Linux, in accordance with well-defined procedures;
  • Help with diagnosing undocumented alarms;
  • Organise and supervise hardware repairs;
  • Upgrade software on production systems;
  • Record every intervention made;
  • Create and maintain documentation for the team.
Qualification required for the Computing Administrator Job, Swiss

Higher technical diploma or equivalent in computing.

Experience and competencies
  • Relevant experience or understanding of Linux or Windows system administration, including installation, task automation and shell scripting.
  • Practical experience with one or more of Apache, IIS, SQL and Perl would be an advantage.
  • Good communication skills, flexibility and ability to work both individually and as a team.
  • Fluency in English or French, and an undertaking to learn the other to basic level.
