A 3 year PhD position funded by the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is available in the Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg (TLS) research institute, Germany for the academic year 2011-2012.

TLS offers a PhD position within the project “Eruptions of Young Stars – Analysis of HST-WFPC2 Observations of V1331 Cyg” funded by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The appointment will be for 3 years at the German salary level TV-L E13/2. The research topic is related to star formation with emphasis on outbursts of young stars. Work will involve the analysis of the HST imagery taken at two epochs to look for evidence of expansion of the dust arcs associated with the star, and a radial change of the dust grain sizes possibly caused by gas/dust interaction. Supplementary data obtained by optical integral-field spectroscopy shall be processed. Additional radio interferometric measurements to map the dust and molecule distributions at high resolution shall be attempted.

Applicants should have a Diploma/MS degree in Astronomy/Astrophysics. They should send a CV, proof of exams, record of university work, and the names of two persons who can be contacted for references.
