University College Cork, Tyndall National Institute invites applications for an MSc by Research position in Wireless Technologies to investigate and develop very low power, intelligent, easily configurable and deployable Wearable Wireless Inertial Sensor Networks for 3D motion capture for professional sports.


In professional sports there are in general three steps required to improve performance namely task definition, training and performance assessment. This process is iteratively repeated and feedback generated from quantitative performance measurement is in turn used for task redefinition. However non-subjective performance evaluation is difficult due to the complexity of the movements involved. When considering the subset of sports where precision accuracy and repeatability are a necessity this problem becomes inherently more difficult to solve. Until recently these sports for example Tennis, Golf and Darts, where the smallest deviation from a prescribed movement goal can result in large outcome error, were deemed too difficult to characterize fully.

Recent advances in Wireless Sensor Networks have now made high performance precise measurements a real possibility. In particular the rapid development of micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS) with high accuracy, high reliability and multiple functionalities has provided a powerful tool set for body motion sensing. Advanced calibration, characterization and data processing techniques have also been developed to enhance the accuracy and sensitivity of low-cost inertial sensors.

The ideal candidate for the MSc by research position will have a 1st Class Honours degree in Computer Science or in a relevant discipline and appropriate project experience in the development of Wearable Inertial Measurement Wireless Sensor Networks.

Experience with embedded software (C, TinyOS) and visualization tools (Java, C#, C++, Labview) and relevant strong programming skills are considered essential proficiencies for the applicant.

Knowledge of the development/deployment of Wearable Wireless Sensor Systems, data analysis, power aware networking and low power embedded system design would be advantageous.

The candidate should have excellent communication skills. A proven ability to work well in a team is desirable. The need to work flexible hours is required and to be adaptable in working practice is essential.

The successful candidate will be a key member of a team with expertise in low power embedded system design, wireless sensor networks (protocols, coding and networking), design automation for wireless sensor networks.
