A Early Stage Researcher Position in Photonics is available within the Liquid Crystals & Photonics group of Ghent University, Belgium. The group is currently looking for new PhD students with a master degree in photonics, physics, applied physics or electronics.
The Liquid Crystals and Photonics Group is part of the department of Electronics and Information Systems (ELIS) at the Faculty of Engineering of the Ghent University in Belgium. The research aims at the development of new electro-optical devices based on liquid crystals, electrophoretics or luminescent materials and is headed by Prof. dr. ir. Kristiaan Neyts.
PhD Project Description
Depending on the interest of the candidate, this PhD will focus on studying electrokinetic properties of individual particles, for example for biodetection and electronic ink applications. Measurement techniques such as optical tweezing and particle tracking video-microscopy are used to study properties of individual particles, that can change dynamically due to binding of target molecules or charging agent additives.

Candidate Requirements
The ideal candidates must fulfill the following criteria:
- have a master degree in photonics, physics, applied physics or electronics.
- have very good study records, and are research oriented.
- are a motivated, communicative team worker.
- are aiming towards a doctoral degree (3-4 years).
- There are no limitations regarding nationality (Belgian, European, non-European are all eligible).
